Claim. The recurring parallel periods of providence are not identical repetitions. The indemnity conditions fulfilled in each age advance in kind: symbolic in the Adam–Abraham age, image in the Abraham–Jesus age, substantial in the Jesus–Second Advent age. The escalation tracks the spirit-stages of the resurrection providence (form → life → divine).
Elaboration. Per 2.2.6. The Ages Categorized with Reference to the Parallels in the Providence:
- Symbolic parallels (Adam–Abraham). “The foundation for the Messiah was restored by fulfilling parallel indemnity conditions of a symbolic type… the age of symbolic parallels.” Sacrifices were offered using symbols (animals, the ark) as objects for the condition.
- Image parallels (Abraham–Jesus). “Fulfilling parallel indemnity conditions of an image type… the age of image parallels.” Israel as a nation became the image of the future Messianic Kingdom; the Temple and Law became image-objects for the condition.
- Substantial parallels (Jesus–Second Advent). “Fulfilling parallel indemnity conditions of a substantial type… the age of substantial parallels.” Christ in person and the Holy Spirit are the substantial objects; believers receive substantial spiritual rebirth.
Significance. Two consequences:
- The escalation maps onto the foundation-of-substance mechanism (see foundation-of-substance): substantial indemnity is what removes fallen nature. The Adam–Abraham and Abraham–Jesus ages could not substantially remove it; only from Jesus onward is substantial-type indemnity available.
- The recurrence is typological, not aesthetic. Part II’s chapter-by-chapter parallels (e.g., 400 years of Egyptian slavery paralleling 400 years of early Christian persecution) are claimed under this categorization. dp-providence-progresses-in-spiral-with-parallel-periods supplies the recurrence framework; this atomic supplies the kind-escalation rule that the spiral atomic only gestures at.
The symbolic / image / substantial triad foreshadows DP’s broader use of these categories for resurrection levels (form / life / divine spirit) and for the three justification modes (works / faith / attendance).
